One of their many claims to fame is that they are Climate Neutral Certified and very recently became carbon negative. Additionally, Avocado has won dozens of awards from US News, Forbes, Glamour, Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping, and Shape Magazine, among many others.
And to top it off, they are ACA (American Chiropractic Association) endorsed.

Essentia was founded by Jack Dell’Accio in 2006. After several family members battled with cancer, he became passionate about getting a better understanding on health and environmental triggers for disease.
From there, he journeyed into creating a non toxic mattress that could improve the lives of those who care about their health and the environment.
Jack is incredibly passionate about sleep wellness, so much so that he works as a certified sleep coach at Hippocrates Wellness of Palm Beach. He has designed courses and lectures on sleep and runs the Rise and Thrive Podcast where he regularly has special guests.
Essentia is responsible for developing and manufacturing their very own patented Beyond Latex™ organic foam. It’s referred to as the “only slow response organic latex foam that feels like memory foam without the chemicals.”
The Essentia Stratami made the list of the best non toxic mattress brands because it received a 5/5 comfort rating by Consumer Reports and was their top recommended foam mattress of 2022.
If the Stratami is a little out of your budget, consider the Tatami mattress, which was also rated 5/5 for comfort but fell short on comfort for the petite sleeper, maybe due to firmness. The Stratami and Tatami are firm, as are most foam mattresses.

4. Sleep on Latex
- Price range: $699-$1,499
- Features: Made in USA; 10-year warranty
- Materials: Organic latex foam, organic wool, organic cotton
- Certifications: GOTS, GOLS, OEKA-TEX®, eco INSTITUT, fair trade certified by Fair for Life
- Financing available: no
Sleep on Latex was founded in 2013 by Karl Shevick. This company offers one of the most, if not the most affordable organic latex foam mattresses on the market today. Their natural materials are simple but pure, eco friendly, and highly sustainable.
Since they are fair trade certified, they truly care about ethically sourced goods and fair pay for workers and farmers.
Their latex is harvested from rubber trees in Sri Lanka through ethical, fair trade practices, but their mattresses are produced here in the USA.
You can customize your mattress’ firmness from medium to firm, though the “firm” got the highest rating from Consumer Reports.
Sleep on Latex has a 100-day “no questions asked” free return policy if you’re not completely satisfied. And this is just one of the reasons why Sleep on Latex made the list of the best non toxic mattress brands.

5. Awara
- Price range: $799-$1,799
- Features: Made in China; Forever Warranty
- Materials: Rainforest Alliance-Certified Dunlop latex, organic wool, organic cotton, premium coil springs
- Certifications: Greenguard Gold, OEKA-TEX®, Rainforest Alliance
- Financing available: yes
Awara uses natural, organic, and ethically sourced materials to make their latex hybrid mattresses, and the reviews are indisputable: they are definitely a top contender when it comes to comfortable non-toxic mattresses. And they have a number of awards to prove it.
The Natural Hybrid Mattress does rank medium-high on firmness, however, making this mattress more suitable for the back or stomach sleepers but not the heavy side sleepers (it might be okay if you are petite).
Also, if you’re a fan of memory foam, this is not the ideal choice, as it does contain natural latex and coil springs. Therefore, sleepers won’t get that feeling of sinking into a mattress like you would with a memory foam option.
You can always check out their Premier Latex Hybrid mattress if you want a thicker mattress as this one has several more inches of latex over the springs. Below is my top recommendation from Awara for best non toxic mattress brands.
Great for stomach sleepers

Awara Natural Hybrid
- Price: $799-$1,399
- Firmness rating: 7/10
- Warranty: “Forever Warranty”
- 1-year trial
- Free shipping & returns
- 10 trees planted with your order
- Insider’s Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers 2021

- Materials: organic cotton cover, GOLS Certified organic natural latex, Certified organic New Zealand natural wool
- Certifications: GOLS, GOTS, OTCO, eco-INSTITUT, Greenguard Gold
- Financing available: Yes
Saatva is not a brand to miss when it comes to non toxic and organic mattresses. They are definitely a top-of-the-line company because of the quality materials they use while also keeping things eco friendly during the manufacturing process.
The Zenhaven Natural Latex mattress listed below is in the mid-range as far as pricing goes, but this company offers a lot of great features. Plus it got rave reviews from buyers.
For starters, this organic and eco friendly mattress is flippable. One side is considered a “luxury plush” while the other side is rated as “gentle firm” for the side sleepers.
The latex used is naturally hypoallergenic as well as mold resistant, and the way it’s manufactured-using only water-makes it void of harmful chemicals, both during processing and as far as byproducts.
You can also shop their foundations or adjustable bases, organic cotton mattress pads and toppers, pillows, bundles, and more.

Best Non Toxic Mattress Brands Frequently Asked Questions
What is a non toxic mattress?
Mattresses are not just wonderful, squishy rectangular things we sleep on; they also have a significant impact on our well being and how we feel.
The absolute best non toxic mattress is made without the use of any harmful chemicals. So, it is safe for your health and the environment.
Some brands claim they are “eco friendly” and “organic,” and while these are wonderful bonuses, it’s not the same as being truly non toxic. Eco friendly mattresses are made in a way that creates less pollution, while organic simply means they are made with organic cotton, wool, and/or latex.
What chemicals are found in regular, commercial mattresses?
Chemical flame retardants, toluene, dimethylformemide, benzene, and on and on. These chemicals are meant to preserve and protect the mattress, but not necessarily you as the consumer. Over time, they off-gas, releasing these chemicals in the form of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).
VOCs can cause anything from mild eye, nose, and throat irritation all the way to organ damage.
Some companies claim that VOCs diminish after several days of airing out, but studies have shown that even after 6 months, high levels of these harmful chemicals can still be lingering. And something as simple as body heat can trigger the offgassing of VOCs. Babies and children are at the greatest risk.
And by the way, memory foam mattresses (or anything with polyurethane foam) can be some of the worst for having these toxic chemicals, which is why it’s so important to purchase a foam mattress that has the proper certifications to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals.
I’ve vetted these best non toxic mattress brands to ensure they don’t contain those harmful chemicals.
What are the benefits of a non toxic mattress?
First off, you should sleep better with the knowledge that you’re not subjecting yourself to toxic substances from pollutants and chemicals. The ultimate benefit, however, is that anything free of toxins is better for your health.
Secondly, you’re helping the environment. Because they avoid pesticides, formaldehyde, and other flame retardant chemicals, you won’t have to worry about these things poisoning the planet during the construction and when your mattress inevitably winds up in a landfill.
What certifications should I look for?
Don’t just rely on a label that says “green” or “eco friendly.” Unfortunately, mattress companies are not required to tell you what’s in them! Look for the following certifications:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Uses a third-party certification to ensure all materials, and the way the mattress is made, is ecologically sound. Must contain at least 70% organic fibers, and prohibits the use of hazardous chemicals. It does allow for natural and synthetic dyes that are deemed safe and non-allergenic.
- GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard). These are standards that are set for the production and manufacturing of organic latex. Anything with this label must be made of at least 95% natural latex. It also must be harvested from USDA NOP certified rubber plantations. If any cotton or wool is used in the mattress, it must be GOTS certified. And, as with GOTS certification, the working conditions for employees must be fair, safe, and avoid any discriminatory practice.
- OEKO-TEX® Uses independent testing methods to ensure the product is safe and doesn’t contain hazardous chemicals. This certification does not guarantee that the materials used are organic, nor does it ensure safe or fair working conditions for employees during the manufacturing phase, UNLESS it has the MADE IN GREEN by OEKA-TEX® label.
- eco INSTITUT. Based in Germany but many products sold in the USA have this label. The certification means the product has been tested by an independent third party, and is found to be free of even trace amounts of hazardous chemicals and VOCs.
- Greenguard. Mattresses made with this certification are allowed to have some chemicals, but the overall VOCs must be below a certain threshold that is deemed safe by experts.
- Greenguard Gold. Has stricter standards than the former, allowing even fewer VOCs.

Organic Content Standard 100. This means that some of the ingredients are organic, but doesn’t ban flame-retardants or other harmful chemicals.
Other certifications you may see from time to time when hunting for the best non toxic mattress:
CertiPUR-US®. This certification was developed to provide buyers with some kind of peace of mind. However, this label can be a bit misleading. While it does ban the use of many toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates, PBDEs, heavy metals, and ozone depleting compounds, it’s important to note that this criteria only applies to the foam portion of the mattress.
Are non toxic mattresses just as comfortable as others?
Absolutely!
A mattresses’ level of comfort isn’t determined by whether or not it is toxic. In fact, it’s mostly related to what your preferences are. As mentioned above, Avocado’s Green Mattress came in as Consumer Reports‘ top choice, and the Essentia Stratami received a score of 5/5 for overall comfort. And their standards are quite rigid.
If you look at reviews for various non toxic mattresses and beds, you’ll see that many people were skeptical that the mattress they chose would be comfortable, but in the end, those same buyers claim they got a better night’s sleep.
